Phonics Instruction
April 16, 2019
Leigh Ann Tipton holds a Ph.D. in school psychology from UCR and is currently an assistant professor at CSULA. In January Leigh Ann visited the Academy and shared an evidence based phonics system with us. Our teacher Mr. Sam has been diligently implementing this learning system since early February. It only takes about 20 minutes per day and incorporates choral responding. This means the students respond as a group to Mr. Sam’s prompts. All the prompts are combined with movement, and the kids imitate the movements Mr. Sam makes when spelling a word. So, when Mr. Sam spells “cat” he moves his hand down his arm as he says each letter sound.
Our students have made considerable improvement since this program boosting phonological awareness was implemented. Thank you Leigh Ann and well done Mr. Sam!
